One way of making politcal decisions is to think about what's best for everyone in the world. At the opposite end of the spectrum is a position of total selfishness: you can think only of your own benefit.
Between these is another position: you can make political decisions based on the interest of a group of people. You divide the world in "us" and "them", and you only care about the benefit of "us". I call this "group selfishness", although it's not entirely like selfishness because you can sacrifice yourself for the benefit of "us".
When "us" is a race of people, group selfishness is called racism. When "us" is a nation state, group selfishness is called patriotism. Where's the difference?
